Talon Energy

Talon Energy, a trusted industrial services firm in Newfoundland and Labrador, is charting a new course toward the green economy. With support from ACOA, the company is leading a major smart meter rollout while building the tools and capacity needed to grow in clean energy sectors like hydrogen, renewables, and smart grid infrastructure—laying the foundation for long-term, sustainable growth.

Objective

Talon Energy, a multi-disciplinary engineering and industrial services firm based in Newfoundland and Labrador, undertook a strategic transformation initiative to pivot its business model toward the green economy. With a background in industrial project execution—including major electrical and civil work in oil and gas—Talon sought to capitalize on emerging opportunities in smart energy infrastructure, hydrogen, and sustainable energy services.

Supported by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the project aimed to:

  • Launch a major smart meter installation project across five regions of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Develop internal marketing and sales systems to attract new green sector business.
  • Position the company as a regional leader in sustainable energy services and project delivery.
  • Define a scalable business development process targeting hydrogen, smart grid, and renewables projects.

Challenge

As the energy sector in Atlantic Canada shifts toward low-carbon solutions, Talon faced several key challenges:

  • Cash Flow Constraints: Upfront working capital was needed to initiate the $1.5M smart meter contract awarded by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, including equipment procurement and contractor mobilization.
  • Brand Positioning: Talon’s existing reputation was rooted in traditional oil and gas and industrial services, creating a visibility gap in the emerging green energy market.
  • Operational Complexity: The company was managing the logistics of replacing 10,000 analog meters across remote communities, requiring the recruitment of local journeyman electricians and coordination with NL Hydro.
  • Sales System Gaps: Talon lacked a structured sales funnel, CRM, and B2B outreach strategy to systematically pursue green energy contracts.

Solution

With total project costs budgeted at $800,000, Talon launched a multi-phase initiative over a 24–36 month timeline. The project was supported by $50,000 from ACOA’s Strategic Growth Initiative (SGI), a $117,500 application to IET funding, and contributions from CAS and internal capital.

Key deliverables were organized under three pillars:

1. Marketing & Market Expansion

  • Completed a modern, sustainability-focused company website and marketing portfolio.
  • Produced brochures and digital collateral aligning Talon with green sector standards.
  • Conducted a market analysis of green energy trends in Atlantic Canada, including hydrogen development zones and smart grid initiatives.

2. Sales Strategy & System Development

  • Defined a structured sales workflow and account-based marketing (ABM) approach, with guidance from Breton Group.
  • Built a CRM system and B2B contact database to pursue commercial and industrial energy projects.
  • Designed and tested a repeatable sales system to support future revenue growth in green project execution.

3. Training & Internal Capacity Building

  • Provided internal sales training, including meeting metrics, client qualification, and closing techniques.
  • Developed a clear internal workflow for green project intake—from opportunity identification to delivery.
  • Positioned key staff to serve as internal champions for clean technology opportunities.

Smart Meter Contract Execution
In parallel, Talon began implementation of its $1.5M smart meter replacement contract. This work included:
Removing outdated analog meters and replacing them with digital smart meters across five rural regions.

  • Hiring local contractors (journeyman electricians) to carry out the work, boosting regional employment.
  • Coordinating closely with NL Hydro for reporting and compliance.
  • Providing all necessary safety and technical equipment.

The green advantages of smart meter deployment include:

  • Exact Billing: Accurate, real-time measurement of usage.
  • Usage Monitoring: Enables customers to track and adjust consumption.
  • Outage Detection: Faster notification and resolution of power interruptions.
  • Time-of-Use Efficiency: Encourages off-peak energy use, reducing grid strain.

Results

Talon Energy’s transformation positioned the company for long-term growth and market leadership in the green economy:

  • Operational Execution: The smart meter project progressed on schedule, demonstrating Talon’s capacity to manage large-scale, decentralized energy contracts.
  • Sales Infrastructure: A CRM and account-based marketing system is now in place to pursue future green energy contracts across hydrogen, solar, and smart grid services.
  • Market Visibility: The redesigned website, portfolio, and branding successfully aligned the company with clean energy clients and public-sector opportunities.
  • Economic Impact: The project generated regional employment, supported the provincial transition to digital energy infrastructure, and reduced long-term carbon intensity through smarter power management.
  • Strategic Readiness: Talon is now actively pursuing opportunities in the hydrogen and renewables space, with a defined sales funnel and measurable KPIs guiding future growth.
